sex and the city

Long anticipated... the opening of the Sex and the City movie. Deb and I celebrated with cosmos beforehand.
Not to give away any plot lines or anything.... but how could Carrie do that?

the first swim

Jack and his friend Brant took a dip at Deb's sub division pool.

Jack picked out the flowers for my pots. He thought they reminded him of tie dye.

the last day

Seven years ago this little boy started Kindergarten at our elementary school. Today was his last day. The big right of passage is that at the end of the year -end assembly the sixth grade waves goodbye to their teachers and their friends and walks down the hall with the principal of their new middle school.

strawberry heaven

Fresh from the country.

I normally buy 5 gallons from the strawberry lady but the berries aren't quite ripe yet. But they are perfect.

the country

Jackson and I spent the weekend in the country. Both sets of my grandparents lived in the same small town about 2 hours northeast of our house. This was the first year that we placed flowers on my Granny's grave. Both my Granny and Papa's entire families are buried in the same cemetery.

And my Gerty and Papa's families are buried in the neighboring town on a hilltop cemetery. Memorial Day was always very important to my Gerty and I promised her that after she died I would continue to place flowers on her and Papa's relatives. Between the two cemeteries I visited 21 graves carefully following the list that Gerty gave me. I put flowers on my great-great Grandpa Sidney who fought for the Union (Illinois infantry) in the Civil War. And his wife Anna who rocked her babies with the rocker that now sits in my bedroom. My great grandpa William who died of the influenza epidemic in 1918 when my Gerty was just 2 months old. My grandpa's three aunts- Minnie the only one who married, Ella the one who collected the family history, and Belle the one who must have been slightly mentally retarded. Gerty's Uncle Earl who died when he was 21 in a hunting accident. Granny's Daddy Clarance who died a month after they arrived from Kentucky- from pneumonia he caught on the buggy ride home from the train station. The stories that build my family.

Then we headed to Dalton Days. A mostly African American small town reunion. Dalton once housed one of the few African American colleges. Up on the hill by the cemetery. There's fried chicken and fish. I missed the parade this year. I was in the bathroom. It featured 4 units. A police car, a firetruck and what Jack called 2 random cars. One was a local politician running for some office. He and Grandma about split a gut over it though. In past year's it's been much much bigger.

Then Jack spent the afternoon fishing in my Papa's pond. Actually it's my Uncle Jimmy's pond since he lives there now. He caught a grand total of 8.

Including this one. It's the world's record for smallest fish.

Jackson drove! He drove from my Granny's house about 1 mile on a gravel road to the blacktop. It might have been a little herky jerky but he did pretty darn well for his first time. I do believe that my Grandpa and Dad taught me to drive on that very same stretch of gravel road. Except I was a lot more herky jerky.

Summer Stuff

Erin and I played at the park this morning.

We love this little bridge.
My new Teva's arrived today. Don't ya just love Ebay.

And my peonie's are bursting out. I love this bush.

Our Colby, like most Border Collie's, is an obsessive licker. Talking serious ocd medication if she were human. Cooper tolerates it only when he's really tired. But it is cute. Except when you are 12 and your dogs frequently make out in front of your friends.

A before and after of my lovely retro chairs. I don't know why I ever thought painting them "beige" was a good idea. Bring on the colors baby.

Kindergarten Graduation

Lauren graduated from Kindergarten today. Here she is with her teacher Mrs. B.

They performed a play about animals in the zoo. Lauren was the lion.

Deb invited us to lunch afterwards for sandwiches and goodies.

the Underwood Wax Museum

Cameron was George Washington in the Underwood Wax Museum. Every kid memorizes a 3-5 minute presentation about a famous person. Trish was able to get off work this afternoon to see the big production.

On the Oregon Trail

Today Cameron's class hit the Oregon Trail. The hallways were filled with kids in various states of the Oregon Trail with numerous little stops for short plays about their journey.

Herm Edwards Football Camp Day 2

Day two of the big Herm Edwards football camp. One of Jack's coaches is a defensive coach for the Chiefs.

Jackson's team, the Bears, won the super bowl. Herm gives them some end of game advice and congratulations. (Herm is sitting down)

And then personally congratulations every team member and gives them a nice football medalion.

The 13-14 year old division Super Bowl Champion the Bears.

And a close up of Jack.

What did he do when we came home from spending 6 1/2 hours of playing football? Well. We played a few hours of baseball. But he was dead on his feet.

Herm Edwards Football Camp

Jackson played football at Arrowhead Stadium today. He's at the Herm Edwards football camp. Playing on their practice field- but with all sorts of Chiefs players. Very cool. And a very nice thing that Herm does for the kids of Kansas City. 1000 ate-up-about football kids. And by the way Jackson didn't seem so very big around these kids. His friend Daniel is at the camp with us. His mom Bonnie and I had a fun time checking it all out this morning. Then we headed home to our nice shady yards and housework. John spent a good part of the day checking it all out.

They divide the kids up into teams. Jack is playing for da Bears. And because of his size and strength is playing on a team of 13-14 year olds.

Today was also Carson's first birthday. Carson is my cousins baby. Love that first birthday cake and Carson's had delightful red icing. It looked so cute smeared all over his face.

These birthday parties are big stuff to the girls. This one featured a moonwalk/bouncy thingee. So they were pooped when they came in for the cake.

Fun Days

Cameron's class is getting ready to reenact the Oregon Trail. So today we did a wagon's hooooo and walked to school with said wagon. Colby and Cooper played the roll of oxen.

Life with a 12 year boy...... who in the world would even think of eating just the creamy middle of the oreo's. Yesterday I gave a ride to two of Jack's friends who just played a hum dinger of a wiffle ball game. How hard can it be to hop in the car. Well.... three boys, one dog of the plumper variety who was determined to go working around a crystal punch bowl and Erin's car seat. Colby was relegated to the back seat and she kinda got stuck and needed someone to move the seat belt. Finally get everyone and everything loaded. Hop in the car. And sit on a whoopee cushion. This is the funniest thing these boys have ever heard.

Today was field day. I staffed the hockey shot game. These were some of my most enthusiastic customers.

Sixth Grade Graduation

It's graduation day! Big shindig at school. It also celebrates their graduation from the DARE program. As the sixth grade level chair I worked my fanny off on this baby. Here's Jackson getting his diploma.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was a slide show of then and now pictures of the kids from kindergarten to sixth grade. I've been working on it for weeks.

Wrangled all these boys for a picture in the hallway.

Lost and Found

This pretty little pup was wondering the neighborhood and found her way to our house this morning. She's a near twin to our Colby. 'Cept one has short hair and the other long shaggy hair.

She was a big hit with the kiddos. Jackson thought of course we should keep her and that she was our Tessie. The same family who took two weeks to name our Cooper has prenamed our next dog Tessie. Remy if it's a boy. (Remember we are Red Sox fans. Tessie is the legendary royal rooter from early Red Sox days - and the subject of a great song by the Drop Kick Murphys. Jeremy Remy is the Sox announcer)

Cameron and Sammy also thought that maybe they could keep her. 'Cept then her name would be Daisy according to Cameron or Petuna if Sammy has her way.

Well her name is Sadie. And her people were thrilled to be reunited with her.

Grandparents Day

We got this picture of Grandparent's Day today. Jackson looks like a giant!

Mothers Day

I'm a lucky momma to have Jackson as my baby. But check it out my baby is now about an inch taller than I am. Yikes.

My boys made it a very nice mother's day for me! Pink roses and a gift certificate to Cockrell Mercantile. (it's this great upscale cooking and gift shop out on a farm)
My momma and me. She's wise and wonderful. I hit the jack pot when it came to mom's.

We all feasted at Deb's after church.

Harold and Grandma Vernie. Another great mama. We know this not only because she is a great grandma to us - not a great grandma but a grandma that's great! But because she most have had something to do with Harold. Who in his kind, patient and gentle way has been such a great Dad to us!
And here's to the mother -to-be. Look how sweet Erin is cradling her baby Susie against the wind after church.
